Cwmtwrch 7 Alltwen 41: Fun in the mud for seven try Alltwen.

A convincing 41-7 win does not reflect the difficult conditions that Alltwen encountered at a rain soaked Cwmtwrch on Saturday. On a pitch better suited to bog snorkelling by the final whistle, seven well constructed Alltwen tries confirmed the confidence with which the side now plays and its determination to play positive rugby, whatever the circumstances.

With the home team having the advantage of playing downhill first half, Alltwen full back Rhodri Lewis and wings Liam Roberts and Matthew Craven were always likely to be kept busy. Gradually however the Alltwen pack began to exert control with number eight Ceiron Daniel carrying strongly and lock Andrew Thomas among those showing some deft handling skills in the conditions.

However it was fly-half Kyle Roberts who provided the side’s first half spark, taking the game to the opposition at every opportunity, never afraid to bring his outside backs into the game and inspiring his side to three well taken pre interval tries, including a solo finish.

Turning with the mud slide in their favour, the visitors superior fitness and better application proved too much of a combination for the home side, who conceded four further second half tries. Match try scorers for Alltwen were Kyle Roberts, Dan Madge, Jonathan Evans, Gareth Ireland and Jordan Hopkins with a final flourish from Ceiron Daniel (loitering out-wide for man of the match glory) and Hopkins.

Better reflecting the conditions, only three of the seven tries were converted, one by Kyle Roberts and two by Gareth Ireland. By the end both had tendered their resignations leaving Hopkins to drop-convert his second from under the posts. To his credit, he succeeded in hitting the crossbar with pinpoint accuracy. Not for nothing is this boy player-coach.

Rain or shine, Alltwen’s charge for the league title continues next Saturday with a home game against Tonna KO 2:30. Be there.
