Alltwen 25 Ogmore Vale 6: Alltwen post another victory

The pre-match collapse of a goalpost at Gwyn Street, led to this game being diverted to one of the pitches at the nearby Recreation Ground, thanks to help from Pontardawe RFC.

Despite the late disruption, Alltwen were able to record a bonus point four tries to nil win, which helps consolidate their foothold in the new division and confirms their competitiveness.

An early penalty goal from outside half Jason Roberts was soon followed by Alltwen’s first try. A charge down by new recruit Jamie "Bozza” Griffiths was followed up by co-centre Jordan Hopkins, who calmly gathered the ball and finished well.

Instead of pushing further ahead however, Alltwen’s play began to lose shape, failing to sufficiently test or stretch the Ogmore Vale defence and enabling the visitors to reduce the arrears with a penalty goal and turn round with an 8-3 half time deficit.

The second half began in the same vein, with Alltwen having the edge without threatening to convert possession into points. Changes at scrum half did bring better communication and some direction to the home side’s play, which eventually saw centre Griffiths celebrate his debut with a try.

With the ball not reaching his hands along the line, it took a searing run from broken play by livewire wing Rhodri Lewis to shake his side into further action. Prop forward Ross Jones was able to crash over at the posts, allowing Richards an easy conversion.

Substitutes Benji Howells and Matthew Craven helped add some go-forward impetus to the Alltwen effort and with Andrew Thomas putting in a man of the match performance the home side were able to secure the bonus point spoils with a final try from Nicky Chart.

Coach Alan Bevan will nevertheless seek an even better all-round performance required for next week’s Gwyn St clash with visitors Banwen KO 2:30. Crash helmets advised.
