Crynant 12 Alltwen 34: Alltwen deliver three-day double

Three days after defeating Crynant at home, Alltwen served up tasty seconds with a five try win in the reverse fixture.

With the home side showing some changes from the earlier encounter, Alltwen took advantage of the dry conditions to establish clear fist half dominance. Firstly some good combination work among backs and forwards allowed Ceiron Daniel a comfortable run-in for his team’s opening try.

The visitors then made their intention clear by spreading the ball across the backline at every available opportunity. After a couple of practise runs (one of which culminated in Rhodri Lewis passing to an empty touchline, leaving watching mam Delyth spitting and cussing) the Alltwen backs then scored one of their best tries of the season. Moving the ball along the line with each man fixing his opponent, Rhodri Lewis was able to set full back Sam Batty free. Batty then expertly drew the covering defender to put wing Matthew Hooper over for a run-in behind the posts.

After some rampaging runs to soften up the opposition, number 8 Dan Owen then saw the Red Sea open in front of him , with Crynant defenders among the interested spectators as he raced over untouched from thirty yards out. With Batty converting, Alltwen’s 19-0 half time lead was as deserved as it was comfortable.

Any thought that the second half would be a stroll in the park were quickly dispelled. Firstly Crynant responded with a splendid individual try from their sharp young scrum half. Then some appalling ill-discipline from Alltwen led to a second converted home try that suddenly put the opposition right back in the hunt, with just one score now separating the sides.

It was centre Jordan Hopkins who then came to his sides rescue at a crucial time, with two well-taken tries. The first with a fine run-in after spotting a gap in the opposition defence, the second following up and dotting down a well positioned grubber that needed the referee to verify that the ball had been grounded inches before the dead ball line.

With the result secure, Alltwen batted out time with only a Sam Batty penalty interrupting Twm Fermer’s efforts to offer Alex Carne as sacrificial lamb at line-outs.

With six wins in their last seven games reflecting the change and improvement in the side's performance Alltwen now face the ultimate test in their progress as they visit certain division winners Tonmawr, Saturday 2:30 pm. Watch this space.
