Alltwen 17 Glyncorrwg 12: Alltwen overcome uncertain start to win

Alltwen overcame an uncertain start against visiting Glyncorrwg to gain satisfying revenge for defeat in the reverse encounter a few weeks previously.

The visiting team showed up with multiple changes to their starting XV. Either that or they must be on a special diet in the Afan Valley, as this was the biggest side to turn up at Gwyn St for quite a few seasons.

With Glyncorrwg then making a strong start and forcing their way over for an early try, the omens were for a long afternoon for the home side.

Gradually Alltwen found their feet and confidence, with Jordan James, Daniel Owen and Ross Jones prominent in taking the attack to the opposition. With the pack securing sufficient foothold Jason Richards was able to keep his side in the hunt with a series of penalties.

As the second half progressed Alltwen began to take gradual control, with Nicky Chart stealing some valuable opposition line out ball and the backs putting some useful kicks into the opposition territory. A frustrating number of penalty kicks at goal were called for and missed, when the better choice might have been attacking lineouts

Eventually the game’s decisive score came from permit wing Luke Thomas. After a series of stumbling runs, half Gerald Davies half Bambi (the bit where the mother gets shot) Thomas did brilliantly to finish  despite the close attention of two or three opposition defenders.  The score enabled the home side to see out the remainder of the game and secure a second successive win.

With some veteran absentees attending Blondy Roberts 50th birthday bash next weekend, a sufficient display of youthful team spirit should nevertheless hopefully see the side through Saturday’s home encounter with Pontrhydyfen KO 2.30
