Tonmawr 19 Alltwen 5: Tonmawr take the title but Alltwen the plaudits.

Any thoughts that Tonmawr would have a comfortable home win to celebrate the division title, were humbled by a heroic Alltwen performance which despite the defeat saw the visitors end the match as the stronger side.

In sunny, hot conditions a good home crowd had turned up fully expecting their side to secure the game and title. Early indications were that they were unlikely to be disappointed as a motivated Tonmawr laid siege to the Alltwen line. Having weathered the initial storm however, Alltwen’s own confidence began to grow and having not taken a backward step the visitors now began a series of determined counterattacks.

With forwards Tom Hopkin, Steve Morgan and Jake Roderick all contributing strongly, the game then took a groundhog day resemblance to the earlier encounter between the two, as Tonmawr courtesy of some sharp midfield talent broke against the run of play to score. Again Alltwen took up the offensive, but made the fatal mistake of failing to spread the ball with men wide, only for Tonmawr to intercept and break away for a second try.

A halftime score of 14-0 did not reflect the run of play, as once again Alltwen first soaked up the offensive with flanker Dan Madge and full back Sam Parry-Batty among those allowing captain Ceiron Daniel ito begin taking the game back to the opposition.

The game then took a decisive turn when some excellent tactical kicking from the Tonmawr fly half took play close to the Alltwen line. An ensuing 5 metre scrum saw Alltwen unluckily lose the ball after winning the strike, with Tonmawr using the confusion to execute a push over try.

At this point the home crowd assumed that with the title effectively secured Alltwen would collapse and the home side run away with a bonus point win. What happened in the last fifteen minutes however was the complete reverse, as magnificently led by Daniel, Alltwen laid siege to the Tonmawr line. By the end hopes of a home side bonus point had turned instead to a determined resolve to keep a clean sheet. Both were denied by Alltwen as Rhodri Lewis , lively throughout, finished well for Alltwen to score with the last move of the game.

So whilst Tonmawr were able to celebrate at the end with a well-deserved title, they will doubtless be relieved at the prospect of not having to face Alltwen again next season. On this form and with this spirit it might not prove too long before the sides meet again.

Alltwen’s season concludes on Weds 9th May with a visit to Cefn Cribbwr, rescheduled at Cornelly KO 18:30.
