Alltwen 27 Bryncethin 16: Alltwen march on with fourth win on the trot.

Alltwen secured their fourth straight league win with a home victory over Bryncethin at Gwyn St, Sat 14th April.

In sunny, dry conditions Alltwen raced into a ten point lead courtesy of an early penalty goal from full back Sam Cross and a try by Jason Richards converted by Cross.

At this point Alltwen may have assumed that a comfortable win was on the cards, especially following their bonus point away win away against the same opponents a few weeks previously.

The young Bryncethin side immediately took advantage of Alltwen complacency however. A well-struck penalty goal was followed by one of the tries of the season involving some beautiful three-quarter interplay. The conversion and a further penalty goal saw the visitors deservedly enter half time 13-10 ahead.

The pivotal point came early in the second hand with 3 substitutions all of whom provided the refreshing impact necessary for Alltwen to resume control. Prop Ross Jones and backrow Jordan James brought the physical edge which invigorated the rest of the forwards into action, all well marshalled by replacement scrum half Paul James.

Despite the visitors enforcing passive scrums, the Alltwen pack imposed itself on the opposition in all other areas, which included some notable lineout work from flanker Alex Carne. Keeping the ball tight where required, Alltwen were able to rumble two further tries, awarded to prop Jonathan Evans and scrum half James. Full back Cross, who kicked well throughout was then able to keep his side two scores ahead through to the end with a series of successful kicks.

Far from the easy victory anticipated this turned into a well-fought contest and an excellent dress rehearsal for Alltwen ahead of next week’s visit of promotion chasing Baglan. Following the heavy defeat to the same opponents early in the season this game will be a genuine measure of how well Alltwen have turned their season around. Definitely a match to look forward to.
