Alltwen 9 Tonmawr 21 : Alltwen backs terrify their own pack.

Anyone watching the forward battle as Alltwen hosted Tonmawr Sat 10th March, would have assumed that the home side were the runaway division leaders, not the visitors.

Led by captain Ceiron Daniel, the Alltwen eight stood toe to toe with their opponents throughout, more than holding their own in all phases.

Behind however was a different story, with the Tonmawr backs looking the more threatening, making good use of the limited possession they were gaining, not least that being gifted to them by their opponents mistakes.

Three times in a first half dominated by the Alltwen pack, errors or misjudgments by the home backs gifted their opponents territory and scores. Rather than scaring the opposition given their ample possession, the Alltwen backs were gradually frightening the life out of their own forwards.

To compound matters, with the home side gamely trying to recover in the second half, another mistake on their opponents line led to a breakaway kick, follow up and score. Whilst there may have been some controversy over grounding there was no arguing the cause.

So, for the Alltwen backs, it was a day to forget, although one that won’t be easily forgotten by their forwards. The Alltwen coaching team will have to work hard to correct things in time for their side’s next encounter at Bryncethin 24th March. They should do so in the knowledge that at its best, this Alltwen pack is capable of standing up to any division opponent. The rest should follow.
