Alltwen 9 Baglan 34 : Depleted Alltwen battle hard against undefeated Baglan.

After securing their second away win of the season at Rhigos the previous week, Alltwen were faced with the visit of Baglan Saturday 29th. The Port Talbot side came to Gwyn St Saturday with an impressive undefeated record, and left with it intact courtesy of a four-try bonus point victory.

An already difficult task for Alltwen was made even harder by the absence of a number of key forwards, with centre Paul Morgan gamely filling in at number 8 and even fly half Dicky Williams switching to the back row second half and attempting his best Richie McCaw impression by being a cheating nuisance.

Despite Baglan being able to assert early scrum dominance, the first 15 minutes was restricted to a penalty goal apiece, with Sean Lewis and his opposite number both converting and missing one each.

Eventually Baglan managed to create a good try courtesy of some excellent support play, with the try being converted from wide out. Alltwen were able to stay in the contest not least due to some excellent lineout work from Alex Carne but progress was undone with the opposition being gifted an interception try which enabled the visitors able to turn around with a critical 20 points to 3 lead.

Still the Alltwen team refused to give up the ghost and a couple of Lewis penalty goals appeared to give the home side an outside chance until a loose kick was charged down, allowing the visitors their first venture into the home 22, which they were eventually able to work into another converted tray.

Even with the result now beyond doubt and despite being further weakened at forward with a yellow card, Alltwen refused to give up the fight. Inevitably the pressure finally told however as Baglan were awarded a penalty try after heavy scrum pressure. That this was all they could muster again spoke volumes of Alltwen’s grit in defence.

The home side will now have the opportunity to lick wounds and recover numbers with a free weekend to follow before their next league encounter away at Banwen KO 14:30 Saturday 13th October.
