Altwen 23 Briton Ferry 3 : Alltwen return to winning ways in the rain

After a few difficult weeks on the road, Alltwen returned to winning ways, courtesy of a hard fought victory over Briton Ferry at Gwyn street.

In drier conditions the result might have been even more convincing. However, on one of the wettest Saturdays in seasons, the home team had to battle the conditions and a determined opposition to achieve a season’s double over the visitors.

Whilst conditions meant that there was little to write about in terms of open rugby, this shouldn’t detract from Alltwen’s application to the task in grinding out a three-try victory.

The first of those tries was scored by Nicky Chart, well used to monsoon conditions following his time hiding from the authorities in Far Eastern jungles. Either way his was an outstanding performance, covering every wet blade of grass and deservedly earning him the man of the match award.

Sam Batty added two penalties for Alltwen to turn around at half-time with an 11-3 lead.

In the second half it was hooker Aaron Burford’s turn to add to the try count, which he did twice, one being converted by Batty.

Alltwen will be both pleased and relieved to have got the winning show on the road again. They must prepare now for an interesting confrontation next week away at Crynant, who surprisingly defeated Banwen to whom Alltwen had lost the previous week.
