Tonna 16 Alltwen 41 : Alltwen make the league take notice.

Third place Alltwen visited second place Tonna, Saturday and made the rest of the division sit-up with an action packed five try performance.

Built on a solid forward platform and with backs showing the ambition to run the ball at every opportunity, Alltwen frequently opened up the Tonna defence with fly-half Kyle Roberts featuring prominently. To add icing to the cake, Jason Richards and Andrew Roberts succeeded with all seven kicks at goal.

In dry overhead conditions the game began at a lively pace. An early well struck penalty from Richards was then followed by one of the tries of the season, as the Alltwen backs struck from deep, with outside centre and player-coach Jordan Hopkins finishing off brilliantly. Not to be outdone, outside half Roberts, then scored with an equally fine individual effort, following a quickly taken lineout.

At 17-3 with half–time approaching Alltwen were looking comfortable. A mini-series of concentration lapses then resulted in two tries and a penalty goal for the home side, enabling Tonna to enter the interval only one point adrift at 16-17.

Despite a lively effort from Tonna, any thoughts of a home revival were gradually obliterated during the second half as the Alltwen pack, inspired by the return of Ashley James, gradually assumed dominance. The backs were finally able to reward the forward effort with another fine try from Jordan Hopkins.

Some lively work by wing Rhodri Lewis who also shone in defence throughout, then led to a clear run-in for second half substitute and former head coach Kristian Walsh. Shortly afterwards Walsh to a mixture of his surprise and horror was set free again and courtesy of a quick visit to the oxygen tent, did well to reach the line before the opposition.

This convincing bonus point win has set the season up nicely. With team Wales being granted the only licence to play next Saturday, Alltwen will now have to wait two weeks to show this result was no fluke as they entertain Fall Bay at home, Saturday 26th November, early kick-off 1:30pm.
