Rhigos 5 Alltwen 11. Alltwen resolve earns well deserved win.

Alltwen retained their unbeaten start to the season with a hard fought and well deserved away win at Rhigos, Saturday 24th September.

With both sides entering the game with 100% records, something had to give and well led by captain Daniel Madge, Alltwen made sure it wasn’t them.

Key to the victory was a competitive set piece and resolute defence against a Rhigos side showing positive intent throughout. Good spoiling work on Rhigos put-in at lineout and scrum, forced the home side to try running the ball at every opportunity, but the visitors defence held strong.

Indeed, Alltwen were able to turn around ahead at half-time, courtesy of two well-struck penalty goals from inside centre Andrew Roberts.

Rhigos appeared determined to hold onto their unbeaten record and a sustained period of attack saw them eventually cross the visitors line mid-way through the second half. Whilst the conversion was unsuccessful, the momentum appeared to be swinging in favour of the home team.

Alltwen began to use a favourable wind more effectively however and an excellent touch-finder from Roberts put the ball into touch deep into the Rhigos twenty-two. Using Nicky Chart to snatchhome ball at the front of the line out, Alltwen were able to set up a driving maul, resulting in a well deserved try for back-row forward Joseph Baugh.

Roberts was unlucky with the conversion but the try proved decisive. Rhigos left in need of a converted try themselves, threw everything bar the kitchen sink at an Alltwen defence that refused to budge.

Alltwen’s next fixture is a WRU cup contest away to Baglan on Saturday October 8th, although fixture secretary Brian Thomas is trying to organise a home friendly for next Saturday Oct 1st. A reminder too, that the fundraiser for Nell May Connick will be held at the clubhouse, the same evening.

Finally congratulations to Alltwen stalwart Ceiron Daniel and his partner Louise for the birth of their baby boy Ioan on the eve of the match. Weighing in at the same birthweight as his father, 9 tonnes 16ozs, it sounds like it mightn’t be long before young Ioan joins the Daniel (and Carney) dynasty in the Alltwen pack
