If Alltwen succeed in achieving their promotion aims this season, they can look back with satisfaction on the resolve shown in overcoming a stubborn and committed South Gower at Bishopston, this weekend.
In dry but windy conditions, Alltwen got off to a dramatic start with a try in the first few minutes, number 8 Chris Balfe finishing a great break by centre Jordan Hopkins. A couple of further midfield breaks including one from man of the match Paul James could easily have led to further scores had the final passes been more accurate.
Any thoughts that this would be a romp for the visitors however were soon dispelled, as South Gower began to exploit good forward strength and secure two converted tries before the break, answered only by a penalty goal from Alltwen’s Jason Richards.
Turning around 14- 8 in arrears and facing a tricky wind, and with the home pack edging the scrums and spoiling effectively in the lineout, the omens did not appear particularly great for Alltwen. But it was at this point that the side began to show its character, physically fronting up to the opposition in all facets and eventually overcoming with tries from the impressive Gareth Ireland and a crucial second from Balfe.
The home side were not quite finished. Aided by a series of late penalties they tested and stretched the Alltwen defence, which remained dogged and unbroken to the final whistle. Four winning points, hard earned, which might well prove their true value at season end.
After two good wins on the road and a tour of the Uplands, Alltwen will hope the good run continues as they host Brackla in the first of three successive home games, Saturday 21st January 2:30 KO. All support welcomed.
