Jason Richards has proved an able and reliable goal kicker for Alltwen this season, a matchwinner at times. Had he been armed with a banjo instead of kicking boots against Rhigos last Saturday, not a cow’s arse in the Swansea Valley would have been threatened.
If it’s any consolation to Jason, his counterpart on the Rhigos side fared little better on the day. What ensued between them was comedy entertainment matched only by 3’6’’ Danny Morgan, once Alltwen RFC Chairman now ballboy, trying to dislodge a match ball from a 30’ tree.
Elsewhere around the field, matters proved more serious however as a stern Rhigos performance threatened Alltwen’s home record and position as title contenders. In a battle of the forwards in windy conditions, Alltwen prevailed helped by another committed performance from man-of-the match prop Ross Jones and the only try of the game from skipper Dan Madge.
The result provided more relief than delight but coach Jordan Hopkins will take some comfort in knowing that winning when you don’t play well is normally a good sign. With two Six Nations weekends upon us all attention must now focus on preparation for the massive top of the table clash with Cefn Cribbwr at home on Saturday 18th February 2:30 pm. Alltwen will have to bring their best game to this and Jason Richards his usual kicking boots.
