A workmanlike if largely unspectacular performance by Alltwen helped them gain a season’s double over Pontycymer at Gwyn St.
The visitors, considerably strengthened since the recent last encounter and fresh from a surprise win over Cefn Cribwr, clearly turned up meaning business and forcing Alltwen to quickly dispel any thoughts of an easy day.
In perfect sunny conditions all first half efforts by Alltwen to cross the visitors whitewash were defeated either by a stern visitor defence or more usually a silly indiscretion which saw the home side concede seven penalties in the first 35 minutes and be restricted to two penalty goals from Sam Parry for a 6-0 half –time lead.
It took a barnstorming run from forward Steve Morgan belying his years, to spark Alltwen into try scoring action, with excellent support work from Alex Carne and Nicky Chart. Fly half Batty continued his impeccable kicking record with a superb touchline conversion.
With Alltwen seeking to put the result beyond doubt and the visitors trying to play catch-up, both sides tried their best to make use of the excellent running condition. However with movements too frequently breaking down the efforts were to little subsequent reward beyond the sides sharing one try each. Alltwen wing Tom Reilly deserves a mention for some determined runs as his game continues to improve, whilst young recruit and second half substitute Logan Walsh was unlucky not to add a furfther score after some fine follow-up work.
Training this week will largely be back to the drawing board as the team prepares for its next encounter at home to Banwen Saturday 13th April KO 14.30.
