Alltwen 0 Glyncorrwg 36: Davy Crockett’s boys refuse to bow.

Facing their own Alamo under siege from league leaders Glyncorrwg , Alltwen delivered an 80 minute defensive performance this weekend that would have pleased Davy Crockett.

The game followed a frustrating spell for the Alltwen team and club. After a stirring win away to Pontrhydyfen helped by a fine brace from centre Jordan Hopkins, any hopes for continuity were dashed by a spell of weather abandonments, cup exits and a bizarre game in monsoon conditions in Penlan that played out like a wild west movie.

So Saturday’s perfect rugby playing conditions at Gwyn Street were a relief as Alltwen welcomed Glyncorrwg once again.

Despite the significant size difference between the two sides there was little difference in heart or skill. The heavier weight of the Glyncorrwg team meant that a glut of possession for the visitors was always going to be inevitable. Three hard worked tries in each half was the most they could muster though as time and again the Alltwen defence refused to yield, with the home side even finishing the stronger, pressing hard at the visitors line.

With all players playing their part mentions in despatches have to go to backrowers Nicky Chart for setting an excellent example in low tackling, Alex Carne for some defiant line out work against the odds and Liam Roberts who gave a lively scrum half performance which reflected his growing confidence.

Alltwen now face another tough home game on Saturday 23rd against another team of early front runners, Banwen. Support will be welcome and deserved.
